A Little About Myself…

My life with chickens all started about 11 years ago, when I successfully convinced my new husband (who was raised on a farm) that I fully understood chickens were not pets, just livestock and that I absolutely WOULD NOT CRY when they ultimately would die. A trip to the local tractor supply, and a few hours later I had already broken my promise as I cried over a little baby chick who took a leap of faith being moved to its brooder and landed not so pleasantly. (No worries reader, that chick made it and ended being a healthy rooster named Allister who lived a good life…well, at least up until an unfortunate run-in with a fox, but that an ENTIRELY different story – and he had a VERY heroic ending). We kept up raising chickens for a few years and then you know…we popped out a few kids and that put a stop to all of my chicken fun temporarily.

Six years later, I’ve begun to raise chickens again – this time with my troop by my side as my fortunate or unfortunate helpers (depending on which kid you ask). My husband had reluctantly agreed to let me get a small flock, I believe he stated absolutely no more than 10 chickens, because he’s a smart man and he knows at some point he’s going to end up taking care of these chickens in some form or fashion (husband – if your reading this, I only added that for laughs…I 100% plan on taking care of these chickens without your help, well you know besides what you’ve already helped with…). But lucky for me, there was a chick minimum order fee on the website, so it just made sense to meet the minimum order since it was cheaper (duh!) and they shipped a few extra for good measure and now we have an abundant flock of 19! That’s right, 17 hens and 2 roosters – that’s gonna be a shit-ton of eggs once they start laying, especially for our family of 5. If you’re a friend of mine, you better believe I’ll be begging you to take some eggs off my hands once these hens get to laying.

In addition of my love of chickens, I’m a HUGE sharer of stories – especially with all of the crazy and random things that occur with my family and I. With that, I thought this blog would be a great output for some of those stories, regardless if it happens in the coop or with my troop. In addition to sharing stories of our crazy adventures, I hope to share some of my go-to chicken and family stories as well. I look forward to sharing my flock, family, and our memories with you through this blog.
